Chest Reduction
Before The Chest Reduction Operation
Introduction to Chest Reduction
Chest reduction is an increasingly popular operation in males which removes/reduces enlarged breasts or “moobs”.
There are 3 reasons why the male breast enlarges:
1. If there is an abnormal increase in glandular (breast) tissue known as Gynaecomastia.
2. If there is an increased deposition of fatty tissue known as Pseudogynaecomastia
3. If there is an increase of both glandular and fatty tissue.
The most common reason for enlarged breasts in males is Pseudogynaecomastia.
During adolescence it is common for the male breast to enlarge and later to decrease to normal size before the age of 21.
Gynaecomastia in the late adolescent and adult male may be associated with hormone disorders, hormone producing tumours, liver disease and other rare abnormalities. In addition, various drugs, if taken for long enough can give rise to this embarrassing condition. Usually though, no underlying cause is found.
The Dublin Cosmetic Surgery Centre has successfully performed chest reductions on many men in the last 20 years.
Am I Suitable For Chest Reduction Surgery?
Most men seek chest reduction as a result of the embarrassment that enlarged breasts can sometimes cause. Occasionally, pain and discomfort may be the deciding factor.
Factors to Consider Before Chest Reduction Surgery
Before chest reduction is considered as a viable option to reduce your breasts, you should be fully tested to exclude any suspicious cause for this condition.
You will need to take at least a week off work after a chest reduction operation.
The Chest Reduction Consultation
At the preoperative consultation for chest reduction you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire before you see the surgeon. After reviewing your medical history, the surgeon will specifically discuss the concerns that you have about your enlarged breasts and what you wish to achieve with surgery.
After examining you, the surgeon will outline what can be achieved with surgery and give you a detailed explanation of the chest reduction procedure, the likely results and the usual course of postoperative events. The surgeon will also answer any questions that you may have about the chest reduction operation.
At the end of your consultation, you will be issued with detailed written information about the chest reduction operation which you are strongly advised to read carefully at home. If you have any further queries/concerns, these can be discussed with the surgeon at a further consultation.
