Before The Eyelid Surgery Operation


Introduction to Eyelid Surgery

Ageing around the eyes is associated with the formation of excess skin folds and eye bags. Eye bags are especially seen in the inner or medial parts of the upper eyelid and along the length of the lower eyelid.

The aim of eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty), otherwise known as eye bag removal is to reduce the excess eyelid skin and to flatten/remove the eye bags. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) can be carried out separately on the upper or lower eyelids or both upper and lower eyelids together.

Am I Suitable For Eyelid Surgery?

Eye bag formation increases progressively with ageing. The two elements of eye bag formation are the loss of skin elasticity around the eyes and the natural receding of the eyeballs into the orbits. 

1. Loss of Skin Elasticity

In the upper eyelids this causes a fold of excess skin to form above the eyelid crease. In the lower eyelids this causes skin to become loose and form shallow folds.

2. Receding of the Eyeballs
 
This occurs naturally as you age which pushes the fat around the eyes forwards causing soft lumps or “eye bags” to form under the upper and lower eyelid skin.
 
In some cases, the upper and lower eyelids may have good skin tone i.e. there is no loss of skin elasticity but there is an excess of protruding fat (“eye bags”) in the lower eyelids only. This is more common in younger people and a different operative technique may be performed.

Factors to Consider Before Eyelid Surgery

Before eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) it is recommended that you have an eye test to assess vision and tear production. The laxity of both your eyelids also needs to be assessed as this will affect the eye bag removal technique.

Alcohol should not be consumed for at least two weeks before and after the blepharoplasty operation.

Aspirin-containing drugs should be stopped for at least two weeks before and after the blepharoplasty operation (if possible).

You will need to take 2 weeks off work after an eyelid surgery operation.

The Eyelid Surgery Consultation

At the preoperative consultation for eye bag removal you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire before you see the surgeon. After reviewing your medical history, the surgeon will specifically discuss the concerns that you have about your eyelids and what you wish to be altered. You will then be asked about any previous eye problems before the surgeon examines you.

If you are a suitable candidate for treatment, the surgeon will outline what can be achieved with eyelid surgery and give you a detailed explanation of the eye bag removal procedure, the likely results and the usual course of postoperative events. The surgeon will also answer any questions that you may have about the eye bag removal operation.

At the end of your consultation, you will be issued with detailed written information about the eye bag removal operation which you are strongly advised to read carefully at home. If you have any further queries/concerns, these can be discussed with the surgeon at a further consultation.
