After The Facelift Operation

Postoperative Management

You will be required to spend 2 nights in hospital following a facelift operation (rytidectomy) before being discharged home. You will be issued with a telephone number to ring in the event of a problem or query.

In the immediate postoperative phase:

• Strict bed rest with the head elevated is advised to reduce the risk of bleeding and to reduce swelling.
• Quick movements, bending, straining and lifting should be avoided and if possible, sneezing.
• Facial movement should be kept to a minimum.
• It is best to drink with a straw and avoid foods that require a lot of chewing.
• Multivitamins and Arnica tablets are recommended to aid healing.

Bandages and drains are removed after 24 hours and the hair is washed before you leave the hospital.

Once home, you must rest as much as possible for the next few days. The hair should be washed frequently to help prevent wound infection and to keep the stitches/staples clean which makes them easier to remove.

You must attend a follow up appointment with the surgeon a week to ten days after your surgery for review and stitch removal.

Recovery & Results Following Facelift Surgery

Full recovery can take several weeks but you should be fit to continue your normal activities within a few days and be confident to appear in public after about a week.

If you are a good candidate for a facelift (rhytidectomy) you are likely to gain a very gratifying result. You can look years younger and this can be a great boost to your confidence. The improvement in appearance can be dramatic and is usually even more so when combined with the removal of eye bags (blepharoplasty), dermabrasion or other surface skin treatments to the upper lip.

It is important to realise that the ageing process will continue after a facelift operation. Ageing is a complex phenomenon and depends on many factors so the rate of ageing is unique to every individual. In simple terms however, if you have a facelift, you will not look as old after ten years.

In some individuals a repeat facelift procedure may be required within a year of the initial operation to gain maximum benefit, as some skin types, particularly in elderly patients, will not necessarily remain stretched after only one procedure.
