After The Tummy Tuck Operation
Postoperative Management
You will be required to spend 2 nights in hospital following a tummy tuck operation (abdominoplasty) before being discharged home. You will be issued with a telephone number to ring in the event of a problem or query.
You will initially be nursed in bed with the knees and hips flexed, with pillows under your legs to ease tension on the abdominal wall and therefore lessen discomfort.
Ankle and knee bending (flexion) exercises are encouraged and elastic stockings are fitted to prevent postoperative deep vein thrombosis. Intermittently inflatable cuffs will be fitted around your calves, and used in the first few hours following surgery to promote blood circulation, and further act to prevent deep vein thrombosis.
You will be encouraged to move about the following day with the aid of adequate pain relief. Initially oral fluids and a light diet are advised until you are able to tolerate solids fully. This is usually in the first few hours following surgery.
A bath or shower is permitted after five days. Gentle activities are resumed slowly in the first few days postoperatively. Vigorous activities such as sports, swimming, and going to the gym are permitted after six weeks.
You must attend a follow up appointment with the surgeon a week to ten days after your surgery for review and stitch removal.
Recovery & Results Following Tummy Tuck
Recovery time after a tummy tuck is very much dependent on you and your return to work will also depend on the nature of surgery. As a general guideline, most men will achieve near normal activity after four to six weeks.
A tummy tuck procedure will flatten and tone up a previously flabby stomach. You must be aware that a long horizontal scar will result which may stretch or thicken and take time to fully mature.
The results of a tummy tuck can make a huge difference to self-esteem and confidence and can often encourage patients to adopt a healthier regime of diet and exercise.
