Breast Reduction
After The Breast Reduction Operation
Postoperative Management
You will be required to spend 1 night in hospital following a breast reduction operation before being discharged home. You will be issued with a telephone number to ring in the event of a problem or query.
You are strongly advised to wear a properly fitted support bra night and day for some weeks. This supports the skin and helps the healing and gently moulds the shape of the breasts during recovery.
The dressings must be kept clean, dry and intact until they are removed. Strenuous movements should be avoided for several weeks and driving is discouraged.
After the dressings are removed the scars can be massaged with skin cream.
You must attend a follow up appointment with the surgeon a week to ten days after your surgery for review and stitch removal.
Recovery & Results Following Breast Reduction
The initial result after breast reduction is often a very peculiar shape, with a reduced distance between the nipple and the fold under the breast and the main bulk of the breast above the nipple. Gradually over the next few months, gravity and the moulding effect of the bra produce the final shape. It is often up to a year before the final result is seen. Adjustments to the scar or touch up operations to improve the shape can be done if necessary after this time.
Breast reduction can be one of the most gratifying operations in the whole of surgery with an extremely high success rate despite the extensive scarring. Patients say that it is like an enormous weight (literally!) has been lifted.
You can go on the beach without embarrassment and fit into ordinary clothes. After breast reduction most women feel a tremendous sense of freedom because they can do all the things that their large breasts stopped them doing before.
