FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions about Breast Reduction Surgery)
In addition to the breast reduction queries outlined below, please refer to Factors Common to All Surgical Procedures.
Q. My large breasts are a constant source of embarrassment because of all the unwanted attention I get and it makes me very depressed. I also suffer symptoms of backache, rashes and am limited in physical activities. I am 25 years old and want to breastfeed in the future. What are my options?
A. This is about as difficult as it gets in this situation. You have to consider all the options and unfortunately there is no perfect and easy solution. On the one hand having the operation may well preclude future breastfeeding but on the other you will be free of your burden. If you are in a relationship and want to start a family as well as breastfeed it may well be worth waiting until you have had your children. Only you can make that decision once you have carefully considered all the options together with your partner.
Q. Will I lose all the sensitivity to my nipples after a breast reduction operation?
A. Your nipples may be totally numb initially but gradually sensitivity will return once the nerves begin to regenerate. It can take up to three years to regain maximum sensitivity but be prepared for the worst in that your nipples will end up being less sensitive than before surgery.
Q. What’s the worst that can happen following a breast reduction operation?
A. Apart from all the complications listed in “Factors common to all surgical procedures” the most unfavourable complication in breast reduction is “nipple necrosis”. This occurs as a result of insufficient blood supply to the nipple areola complex after it has been elevated to its new position. There are many causes for this but in expert hands it is a rare complication. Further surgery may be required in the future to reconstruct the nipple.
