Breast Uplift

Before The Breast Uplift Operation

Introduction to Breast Uplift

There are varying degrees of sagging (ptosis) of breasts. The degree of ptosis of the breasts is determined according to the position and level of the nipple relative to the level of the crease under the breast.

A breast uplift operation (clinically known as a mastopexy but more commonly known as a "boob uplift") will reshape a sagging (ptotic) breast to a more normal, pleasing and youthful shape without changing its actual size. A new ‘skin bra’ is fashioned which reduces the surface area of the skin covering the breasts in relation to the breast volume so that they are fuller and more pert with the nipples raised to a higher position. This gives the breasts a much more favourable aesthetic appearance.

Am I Suitable For Breast Uplift Surgery?

The most common reason for having a breast uplift operation is actual loss of breast substance (volume) following pregnancy or weight loss. The amount of skin covering the breast remains the same but with less breast substance to cover, the breasts become droopy with the nipples lying lower than the breast crease when standing.

Factors to Consider Before Breast Uplift Surgery

If you are concerned that you have droopy breasts, it must be emphasised that a breast uplift operation will leave you with noticeable scarring on the surface of the breast.

The scarring will always be visible no matter how well the skin heals after a breast uplift operation but will usually fade in the fullness of time. Scars can stretch on occasions and be very noticeable so it is important that you take this into consideration, particularly if you are planning on having more children. Pregnancy should be avoided for some years after a breast uplift operation to avoid stretching the scars so this operation should only really be considered if your family is complete.

You will need to take a week off work after a breast uplift operation.

The Breast Uplift Consultation

For the breast uplift operation we recommend that your partner is present at the consultation so that you are both fully informed about the procedure.

At the preoperative consultation for breast uplift you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire before you see the surgeon. After reviewing your medical history, the surgeon will specifically discuss the concerns that you have about your breasts and what you wish to achieve with a breast uplift operation.

After examining you, the surgeon will outline what can be achieved with surgery and give you a detailed explanation of the breast uplift procedure, the likely results and the usual course of postoperative events. The surgeon will then show you serial photographs of the appearance of the breasts at intervals during the recovery period following a breast uplift operation. The surgeon will also answer any questions that you and your partner may have about the breast uplift operation.

At the end of your consultation, you will be issued with detailed written information about the breast uplift operation which you are strongly advised to read carefully at home. If you have any further queries/concerns, these can be discussed with the surgeon at a further consultation.

You should think very carefully before undergoing a breast uplift operation and discuss it carefully with your partner as the final scarring may be unacceptable to some.
