The Operation
Day of Dermabrasion Surgery
Important factors to be fully aware of before a dermabrasion operation are:
1. Driving
You will be able to drive home after a dermabrasion operation if it is performed under local anaesthetic but we thoroughly recommend that you are driven home by someone. If however it is performed under general anaesthetic you are recommended not to drive for at least 24 hours.
2. Eating & Drinking
Abstain from all food and drink (including sweets and water) for at least 4 hours before your dermabrasion operation.
Before dermabrasion surgery, the operating surgeon will answer any final questions/queries you may have about the dermabrasion procedure before taking preoperative photographs of the area to be treated.
The Dermabrasion Operation
A dermabrasion operation on small areas of skin usually takes less than 30 minutes and is performed under local anaesthetic. Large areas of skin are best treated under general anaesthesia and usually take between 30 and 45 minutes.
The surgeon uses a small wire brush (about 0.5 cm in diameter) connected to a dental drill. The rapidly rotating brush is passed over the skin producing a superficial graze. The surgeon varies the depth of the graze until the skin is uniform.
At the end of the dermabrasion procedure the treated area will be red and bleeding. Ointment is applied to the abraded area during the healing process.
