Inverted Nipple Correction
FAQs
(Frequently Asked Questions about Inverted Nipple Correction Surgery)
In addition to the inverted nipple correction queries outlined below, please refer to Factors Common to All Surgical Procedures.
Q. Does the final result depend on the severity of the nipple inversion?
A. The simple answer is yes. Some nipples are so severely inverted that they will almost certainly require a further procedure.
Q. Will it be painful after an inverted nipple correction operation?
A. Some discomfort may occur in the first 24 to 48 hours but this is readily controlled with mild pain killers. Once you are discharged from hospital you will be given pain killers to take as required. Pain and discomfort is not considered a real issue with this procedure.
Q. I am desperate to have my nipples corrected but wish to breastfeed, is this still a possibility?
A. It is still possible to breastfeed afterwards although this may prove difficult or impossible due to the fact that the milk ducts in the nipple are often affected by the operation. It is therefore best to prepare yourself beforehand that this may well not be possible.
Q. What, if any, are the complications following an inverted nipple correction operation?
A. Inverted nipple correction is a relatively straightforward procedure but in extreme circumstances the following may occur:
Breastfeeding: See above
Nipple sensation: The sensation to the nipple may be partially or even totally impaired. This may be permanent. Usually most patients experience some loss of sensation, which gradually returns to normal in time.
Infection: Sometimes the area around the operation site can become infected. A course of antibiotics will usually be required to treat this.
Recurrence or failure: It is still possible for the nipples to invert again after the operation, even after the most expert surgery and further corrections may be required.
Nipple necrosis: This is a rare complication and can occur if the blood supply to the nipple following surgery is impaired. Further surgery may be required in the future.
