Liposuction
Before The Liposuction Operation
Introduction to Liposuction
Liposuction (fat suction) or liposcuplture is a technique to resculpture parts of the body that have unsightly, stubborn areas of fat which did not respond to diet or exercise.
Essentially the procedure entails the removal of localised areas of body fat by sucking it out.
The Dublin Cosmetic Surgery Centre has successfully performed liposuction on many women in over 20 years.
Am I Suitable For Liposuction?
Liposuction (liposculpture) is most effective in those patients who are of normal weight, but who have stubborn areas of fat. Liposuction is used to reshape or re-sculpture the following areas of the body:
• Face and neck: Liposuction is routinely used in conjunction with a facelift operation in patients with excess fat under the chin and in the neck.
• Limbs: Liposuction can remove unwanted areas of fat in the thighs, knees, calves, ankles, buttocks, arms and other abnormal isolated fat deposits.
• Abdomen: Liposuction can be used alone in suitable cases or in conjunction with a tummy tuck
• Breasts: Liposuction can remove abnormal collections of fat in male breasts (gynaecomastia) as well as in the female breast.
• Lipomas: Liposuction is effective against large isolated collections of fat.
Factors to Consider Before Liposculpture
Liposuction (liposculpture) is not a substitute for weight loss in the obese. In some situations it is the only effective way of removing unwanted fat as traditional methods of dieting and exercising are ineffective e.g. culotte de cheval or riding breeches deformity on the outer thighs.
The quality and amount of overlying skin are also factors to consider as removing fat from any area can result in overlying loose skin.
You will need to take a week off work after a liposuction operation.
The Liposuction Consultation
At the preoperative consultation for liposuction (liposculpture) you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire before you see the surgeon. After reviewing your medical history, the surgeon will specifically discuss the concerns that you have about the various areas of your body and what you wish to achieve with liposuction.
After examining you, the surgeon will outline what can be achieved with liposuction surgery and give you a detailed explanation of the liposuction procedure, the likely results and the usual course of postoperative events. The surgeon will also answer any questions that you may have about the liposuction operation.
At the end of your consultation, you will be issued with detailed written information about the liposuction operation which you are strongly advised to read carefully at home. If you have any further queries/concerns, these can be discussed with the surgeon at a further consultation.
