(Frequently Asked Questions about Liposuction Surgery)
In addition to the liposuction queries outlined below, please refer to Factors Common to All Surgical Procedures.
Q. What are the possible after effects of the liposuction operation?
A. Rippling and sagging of the skin can occur and will depend on the preoperative skin tone and the amount of fat removed. It is not always possible to predict how much the skin will retract afterwards. If loose skin and sagging is already present it will almost certainly occur after surgery.
Lumpiness and hardness occurs for a while and is to be regarded as part of the healing process. Usually this resolves after a few weeks.
Ruts, Depressions or Defects can occasionally occur even in the most experienced hands. Further surgery may occasionally be required to improve the situation.
Numbness and sensory changes can occasionally be expected initially (e.g. numbness, pins & needles) but these usually resolve in the fullness of time.
Q. Is there a limit as to how much fat can be removed in one liposuction procedure?
A. Most surgeons will safely remove up to 3 to 3.5 litres of fat during a single liposuction procedure. Removing larger quantities can result in excessive bleeding into the tissues causing excessive bruising which takes longer to resolve.
Q. Can you treat obesity using liposuction?
A. Liposuction was not developed to treat obesity. It was developed to remove stubborn areas of unwanted fat which do not respond to diet and exercise. Over the years some practitioners have extended the traditional boundaries and removed larger volumes of fat in one procedure. Most practitioners will agree that removing large volumes of fat at any one time is not recommended but that repeated procedures spaced out at intervals can go a long way to reduce the total volume of superficial body fat to produce an improved appearance.
Q. Will I be scarred following liposuction?
A. The incisions made for the insertion of the cannula are only a few millimetres wide. This means that scarring is not usually a problem with this procedure.
