Excessive sweating or hyperhydrosis occurs in about 1% of the population and is thought to be of genetic origin. It is caused by over activity of one type of sweat gland (the eccrine gland). These glands are found throughout the body but are concentrated on the palms of the hands, soles of the feet and in the armpits.

It is possible to inject the skin of these areas and block the action of the nerves that supply the sweat glands thereby preventing them from producing sweat.

Factors to Consider Before Excess Sweating Treatment

Excessive sweating will not disappear instantly. It takes several days to block the nerve impulses to the glands before the full effect is seen.

Treatment for excessive sweating will not be administered in the following circumstances:

• If the patient has experienced previous problems with excess sweating treatments.

• If the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding.

• If the patient has a known muscle disease or is taking drugs to relax muscles.
