Introduction to Treatment for Lines & Wrinkles

Dynamic facial wrinkles and unsightly lines of facial expression result from over activity of the underlying facial muscles. Anti wrinkle treatments prevent these facial muscles from contracting so the cause of the wrinkle is eliminated. In time, the wrinkle becomes less prominent and can even disappear completely.

This method of anti wrinkle treatment is known as the ‘hibernation treatment’ because the muscle ‘goes to sleep’ or is in hibernation.

Am I Suitable For Treatment for Lines & Wrinkles?

Hibernation treatment is used to treat the following areas of lines & wrinkles on the face:

• Horizontal forehead lines & wrinkles
• Vertical lines & folds between the eyebrows (glabellar lines)
• Crow’s feet (outer margins of the eyelids) and horizontal lines in the lower eyelids
• Turkey neck and horizontal necklines

Factors to Consider Before Treatment for Lines & Wrinkles

Facial lines and wrinkles will not disappear instantly. After a facial wrinkle treatment it can take several days for the overlying skin of the underlying muscle to smooth itself out once the muscle has stopped contracting.

Facial lines caused by ageing and sun damage will not respond to hibernation treatment.

Hibernation treatment injections will not be administered in the following circumstances:

• If the patient has experienced previous problems with hibernation treatment.

• If the patient is pregnant or breast-feeding.

• If the patient has a known muscle disease or is taking drugs to relax muscles.

The Treatment for Lines & Wrinkles Consultation

At the preoperative consultation for anti wrinkle treatment you will be asked to complete a medical questionnaire and read detailed written information about the procedure before you see the surgeon. After reviewing your medical history, the surgeon will specifically discuss the concerns that you have about your facial lines and wrinkles and what you wish to achieve with hibernation treatment.

After examining you, the surgeon will outline what can be achieved with treatment and give you a detailed explanation of the anti wrinkle treatment procedure, the likely results and the usual course of postoperative events. The surgeon will also answer any questions that you may have about the hibernation treatment procedure.

At the end of your consultation, if you are a suitable candidate and you are happy to continue, you can undergo an anti wrinkle treatment procedure straightaway.
